On November 22nd Dr. Liam Walsh went for a short ski in Hatcher Pass, an area of the Talkeetna Mountains and never returned. Due to weather and horrible avalanche conditions, a rescue or retrieval of him has been unsuccessful.
In two months following at Hatcher Pass we have had 3 avalanche fatalities. Unprecedented for the area. Regardless of factors, the state has been thinking of ways to combat this through education and awareness. But through this process we've been thinking of other ways to make people aware as well.
We are hoping to install some signs at some of the Hatcher Pass parking lots that say, "Are you Beeping?", or something along the like, to ensure people have their Avalanche beacons and all other necessary equipment you need for backcountry travel. With each sign possibly having a short dedication to each individual and their names.
I know many of my friends on Facebook are not in Alaska and most of you are not even skiers, but if you were to make any donation that I may be able to donate to Hatcher Pass Avalanche at the upcoming fundraising event on Feb 20th for the fabrication and installation of these signs, I would be forever grateful and it would assist in the cause and efforts.
I feel proud to be a part of this and if you were to assist in our efforts, it will make a difference and you will have had a part in something big and close to many peoples hearts.
We are hoping to have these put up to save liv
es and help people in thinking twice before going unprepared. Even if it's just one person we save, it all matters, and It will forever make a difference.
Peace and Love,
