Hey y’all. As you all know, and if you didn't, now you do; I have recently taken a significant step in my life – I’m a boy! I have been on testosterone for the past year and to try and express my happiness would fall short over text. I’m currently working as a researcher at an ophthalmology hospital while pursuing a masters in Neuroscience at the Sorbonne University in Paris, with plans to continue with a PhD afterwards. I’ve been lucky that my tuition is only €300 a year, and I've been able to support myself entirely.
The next and final major step of this medical journey is top surgery! I have been yearning for this for several years now. As with most things in life, there is a positive… and a negative. The positive is that the doctor moved my appointment 6 months earlier than anticipated, and the bad news is I have less time to work towards the associated monetary goal. The surgery is scheduled for September 30, 2022 at Hospital Tenon in Paris and will be performed by Dr. Jonathan Rausky (he's wonderful and speaks English).
The surgery would cost $9,000 in Minnesota, whereas in France, it costs €3,800. As you can see, the price difference is insane, so I am beyond thankful for the opportunity to have it done in France.
The cost breakdown is:
X €800 to pay the anesthesiologist
X €3000 for the surgery
X €1000 to rent an airbnb for the week of recovery, where a friend will come to help take care of me. I live in a six-floor walkup apartment that is 118 sq ft. All my storage is above my head, and after surgery I will not be able to lift my hands above my shoulders for a while. This is an essential aspect of the surgery, especially since my family will not be able to come help take care of me.
X my due date for these costs is September 1st.
Obviously, I understand that times are tough right now, and not everyone will be able to help financially, but even a quick share or the mention of it is enough. I truly thank you from the bottom of my (soon to be flat-chested) heart and am so incredibly grateful for my friends, family, and support systems throughout this life-changing transformation in my life.
See you next summer on the topless beaches of Mykonos,
Nate
