Abbie's Jaw Surgery

Donation protected
Abbie was born with hemifacial microsomia and atresia.  To you and I this means she was born missing a portion of her jaw and her left ear.  Abbie has very little hearing on her left side, the inability to wear glasses or sunglasses and asymetry in her face, along wth chewing and nasal difficulites due to the missing jaw.
If we are able to secure funding, the surgery will be done this summer by Dr. Posnick, at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC.   Dr. Posnick has given us the breakdown of what will need to be performed on Abbie to correct her jaw and the actual procedures needed, which we have shared on this site.

In short, he will remove a portion of her rib and use it to replace the missing jaw.  This procedure will be lenghtly and a few follow up surgeries will be needed.  Dr. Posnick has provided us a fee list (above) for his portion of the surgery.  He does not accept insurance, and this amount for 2017 was $34,800.00.  This amount does not include the over $4,000.00 we have already spent on braces for Abbie, nor does it include the pre operation appointments with the otolaryngologist, speech pathologist, sleep apnea clinic, pediatric ENT, pediatric ophthalmologist, and pediatrician for lab work and surgery clearance or the hospital stay and anesthesia.  We expect our insruance to pay a portion of the hospital stay and anesthesia once we meet our deductables for 2018.  The doctor requires full payment of all fees two weeks prior to the surgery date, which we are looking at early July 2018.
Abbie is 16 years old, and a junior at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Virginia.   She is enrolled in advanced studies, currently taking four Advanced Placement (AP) courses, in addition to honors courses.  After graduation in June 2019, Abbie plans to attend college in the Virginia area to study Psychology.   She enjoys photography (please see link to Abbie's photography portfolio abbiewathen.crevado.com )and crew; as a strong member rowing for the Lake Braddock Bruin Crew Team, making it to Nationals in previous seasons.
Abbie would be happy to sell some of her photography from her link above, with all proceeds going to this fund.
Abbie has a twin sister, Maggie, and a younger brother, Alden, who also are taking advanced courses at Lake Braddock Secondary School.

We appreciate you reading Abbie's story and helping her in any way to reach her goal to move forward in life with her new jaw. Please feel free to share with any one you may feel this will touch.
