I find myself in the position I did not ever see myself in. I am reaching out to let you know that as an absolute last resort I’m fundraising to afford my last two semesters in college. My school has drastically cut loans and grants, leaving me with a large balance to pay to receive my degree.
As you probably already know, my degree is of the utmost importance to me and I see it as critical for my future. I’ve been working full-time and fully funding my own education with the goal of working in nursing. Like so many others have found themselves in tough spots this year, the COVID pandemic has impacted my ability to work at my job in hospitality-- a position I’ve held for 6 years. I was laid off in March 2020.
The timing of my layoff coincided with me maxing out on my Federal loan amount for undergrad. As an unemployed person, an outside loan is not an option for me. I know I’m not alone in the financial struggles that this year has provided, and I’ve prioritized paying for medication for my Lupus, paying for textbooks and now I find myself struggling to meet my tuition. I am 12 credits away from my Bachelor’s degree...something I’ve been pursuing for years while working. As my friend said “You don’t quit a marathon one mile from the finish line”. Asking for help like this is a last resort for me, and not a decision I arrived at easily.
This has been a complete hardship and has left me at a standstill that feels like a huge turning point in my life. I plan to do whatever I can to stay in school and will continue to try and find work. A donation of any amount would be greatly appreciated and I am humbled by the need to ask.
