Last Wednesday May 27 Lauren Smith, my good friend and fellow barrel racer, had went out to catch her horses to ride. As she was trying to catch her gelding he somehow got her down and stomped her leaving her with multiple fractures in her face and a lacerated liver. Lauren does not remember any of this so we aren't 100 percent sure how the accident happened. She was rushed to the trauma unit at CMC hospital where she immediately went to ICU. On Friday morning the doctors had decided that her swelling had gone down enough to be able to do the reconstruction of her facial fractures. Lauren received 10 plates and multiple screws in her face that day. Lauren got to come home from the hospital on Sunday afternoon but as we all know, she has a very long road ahead of her and at this time she does not know when she will be able to return to work. Lauren did not have health insurance so this leaves her with an outrageous amount of medical expenses. Her care and doctor visits will continue over a period of time.
