Donald Illness

My husband Donald Hedrick went into the hospital on 04/27/15 to have a common surgery to remove a diverticuli from his esophagus (laprascopic).  After 2 days, he was miserable and his stomach was very distended. As I called doctors offices for days, I was told " Not to worry " that he was fine & this was ALL normal.  On Sunday 05/03/15  I was Very Concerned and got him into the car to go to the emergency room. Within 10 -15 mins. at the ER,  he was told his lung had collapsed & that he had a Tear in his esophagus. I was there all alone and the Dr. said we must get a chest tube in him and on a vent right away or he was going to die. At this point, nurses were contacting our familes to advise them of this extremely Critical situation and that they needed to be here right away.  My family was all out of town that wknd due to a family wedding. My sister & niece were almost 2 hrs away, but were here immediately as they were life squading Don to Good Sam in Cincinnati because we were at a smaller hospital that does not handle that type of trauma. Once he arrived at Good Sam, the doctors had then told us that the 1st few days would tell us if he would survive due to his body cavity filling with fluid ( infection ) and the fact that his lung had collapsed and it too was drowning in the body fluid as well.  His family came the next am flying in from Fla. Ga and also Akron. As of that date 05/03/15  Don was on the vent and had several drain tubes in him. He was taken to the O/R several times and had to have stents placed in the esophagus to block the leaking. They have had to go in and redo the stents several times because they would move and the leak would continue.  After placing him in to a drug induced coma and having to put a temporary pacemaker in him because of the meds & sedation he continued to struggle day by day to survive. Any one who has ever been around Don is aware that he was Navy Veteran and a wonderful provider for his family not to mention the Love he has for his family & friends. He is  self employed  and took care of not only me with many health issues but helped to care for his mother who was struggling with health problems. He is a very strong, loving , and generous man who would do anything for anyone. Unfortanately, he has NO disablity insurance and we lived mainly pay ck. to pay pay ck. due to myself not working because of seizures and an immume system disease. At this time, I am reaching out for people to help during this time of hardship due to his future surgeries and extended illness. He has been on a ventilater, trache, and feeding tube for the last month in ICU. They are informing us that he will not receive anything by mouth for at least another 30 days or more, he has already lost 50 pds. We are also being told that there will be extensive rehabilitation involved.  I truly believe that he would be appreciative and overwhelmed with gratitude if anyone could help him at this time as he himself has helped so many others during his life time. I want to Thank everyone for their prayers and continued support during this horrible tradgety. I would Love to be able to tell Don that during his recovery period people are reaching out to him to support & help him as he continues to improve. I would be eternally grateful for any donations to help relieve the stress on our family.
