Happy birthday, mom!
For the past 17 months, my mom, Jen Alegria, has been battling breast cancer. This battle is not only against the disease attacking her body, but also the stress from the immense costs of operations. Unfortunately, many restaurants do not provide health insurance, and my mom could not afford healthcare at the time of her diagnosis. It took a long time to get on a plan, so she is now suffering under hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt in hospital costs. My mom is a chef and manager at Tim's Table, a locally owned restaurant in Mooresville, NC, she is a single mother of three, and she has always been a major inspiration to me and my two brothers.
My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer during my first year of college at UNC and I felt that I couldn't be there for her. She has had a long journey from diagnosis to radiation and a double-mastectomy and reconstruction. A problem seems to happen every step of the way. As I am writing this, an infection is bringing her back to the hospital. This requires at least two operations to correct. She is tired. In the wake of COVID-19, I worry that she will be exposed because she can't afford not to go work everyday. I worry every time she has to go to the hospital or doctor for an appointment, but an infection or complication could also be very dangerous. Every choice is difficult. I want to help my mom, and the best way that I can make a difference is by raising money to help with the weight of the debt for her cancer treatment and recovery process.
This situation is urgent, my mom is currently being sued by the hospital because she cannot pay her hospital fees (seems counterintuitive, right?). She will be having surgery again, 2 days after her birthday. My mom is not going to ask for help herself. I know there have been many fundraisers circulating for people and important causes and many people out of work. It is a difficult time. I have fought with the idea of it being the wrong time to ask for help, but I have come to the conclusion that there will never be a time that feels right. So, I chose her birthday. My mom needs help.
