Hi, my name is Anne Hoffman, and I am writing on behalf of one of my dearest friends, Thomas Summerville. Thomas and I met 8 years ago in social work school. That is also where he met his future wife, and my friend, Tracey, who is also a social worker.
Three years ago, Thomas and Tracey opened their hearts and home to two wonderful dogs, Olivia and Jacob. Olivia and Jacob were rescued from a dire situation in Puerto Rico and provided a safe, loving home in Brooklyn. They recently moved to Poughkeepsie, New York, where the dogs have quickly and happily adjusted to their newfound freedom to roam and play outside.
Jacob is a 4-and-a-half-year-old, healthy, neutered, approximately 35lb whippet/lab mix. Unfortunately, Jacob is also a very scared dog who is particularly affected by interactions with strangers, which has led him to act aggressively at times. Although most of his behavior has become manageable, there have been moments when he’s acted in unpredictable ways. After a recent incident occurred outside of anyone's control, Thomas and Tracey are left with the awful and heartbreaking decision to rehome Jacob, which has devastated the couple. Thomas and Tracey have spent weeks outreaching to as many shelters and contacts as they can, with no success, because of his aggressive history.
They have exhausted almost every resource possible and are unwilling to give up the search to find Jacob a loving home that can care for him, since the alternative would be to put their beloved Jacob to sleep. The best (and only) option they’ve found is a permanent home for Jacob at Spirit Animal Sanctuary (http://www.spiritanimal.org/), where Jacob would receive the care, love, and guidance he needs. However, it is an extremely costly option.
Spirit Animal Sanctuary is a sanctuary for dogs that have a hard time adjusting to a human world. After extensive training, dogs live in groups and are able to live out the rest of their lives in a cared for environment. Spirit requires a large upfront fee to ensure that the dogs are able to be provided for barring any unexpected medical issues that could arise. Thomas and Tracey are willing to pay as much as they can from their existing resources, but are hoping for $3,000 dollars to help with Jacob’s placement. Any contribution to help save Jacob’s life and provide him with the opportunity to live at Spirit Animal Sanctuary is deeply appreciated. If funds go over the $3,000 dollar mark, they will automatically be donated directly to Spirit Animal Sanctuary to help other dogs in similar situations.
Thank you for your consideration,
Anne Hoffman
