Shannon and Chase found out that they were pregnant last November. During a routine sonogram their radiologist discovered their baby had a heart defect known as Pulmonary Atresia with Intact Ventricular Septum (PAIVS), a rare congenital cardiac lesion. They were sent to the Univ. of Vermont Medical for a second opinion. The doctors concurred on the diagnosis. UVM referred them to Boston Childrens Hospital.
Boston Childrens scheduled a meeting within days. At that time, Shannon and Chase were informed about PAIVS and what surgeries the baby will need. Upon birth a pulmonary artery shunt will be placed allowing blood flow. After recovering a second surgery will occur, opening up the coronary arteries.
Shannon and Chase are a hardworking, determined, positive and loving couple. They are thrilled at the prospect of becoming first-time parents, but as you can imagine, they are scared and slightly overwhelmed with what is happening.
Shannon will be traveling to Boston from upstate New York , where she and Chase live, three weeks prior to her scheduled cesarean section at Boston Childrens. The baby will reside at Boston Childrens, Shannon will be there for the baby's entire stay. Chase will return, as often as he can as he will, of course, be working.
The strength and courage Shannon and Chase have shown during this time has amazed their family members. Their unborn child is loved deeply and we all hold out tremendous hope and resolve that the baby will thrive and grow to live a healthy life.
The cost of helping the baby survive and thrive as you can imagine, will be astronomical. We are hoping that if you are able, you can see your way to helping them.
