Spike is a 10 months old Samoyed puppy that my nephew, his wife and daughter got from a registered AKC vet in OK, USA. They travelled from TX, USA to bring their baby home. Two months ago, Spike was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, which is a rare condition for a puppy his age, regardless of the breed.
Spike's condition gets complicated every 3 to 4 weeks as he develops ketones in his urine. high blood glucose, a fever which baffles ER doctors, throw up (bile, even after drinking water) and extreme lethargy. This requires him to be rushed to ER where he is kept under observation (3 to 4 days). The treatment requires several tests (lab analysis, ultrasound, urinalysis, CT scan, etc.) combined with medication (insulin, 2 or more antibiotics, IV fluids, etc.). As a follow up, there are several visits to continue to monitor his glucose levels with internal medicine (specialists) and also the family veterinarian.
My nephew has insurance however no insurance company will cover Spike since his condition is deemed pre-existing. My nephew has spent over $15K and today, May 10, 2021, Spike is at the hospital since he his condition deteriorated over Mother's Day weekend, so still counting.
My nephew and his family stay committed to treating Spike and hopefully getting a good handle on his diabetes in the first 6 months after his diagnosis. However, as you can imagine, they are undergoing tremendous financial, emotional and physical drain. I will therefore appreciate if you can help our family fight for Spike.
Thank you All in advance.
