Hi my name is Julie. I run the Blacksmith's Tea and Coffee Shop in Burwash, East Sussex which is a small, close village where everyone helps each other. On Saturday 29th July 2023 I witnessed a dog being run over by a car on Burwash High Street. I will never forget that thud and the scream of pain from the dog. Upon running out of the tea room I discovered that the dog that had been hit was Teddy, a dog that we know well along with his owners.
Teddy is a little rescue crossbreed. He was much loved and had a very close bond with his previous owner. Sadly, his previous owner took his own life and Teddy ended up with other members of the family who also had other dogs who sadly then attacked Teddy. It was then decided Teddy should be handed into a rescue centre.
Teddy was then adopted by George & Sophie who fell in love with little Teddy. They adore him and Teddy has become very well known and loved within the village often joining Jules and her pup on a walk after the tearoom has closed.
It was clear after the accident that Teddy was very badly injured as his back leg was at a complete right angle and he couldn't walk at all. Teddy was actually hit twice as he was first clipped by the car (the driver could not have avoided this) but upon stopping the driver then moved his car onto the kerb and drove over poor Teddy again.
Teddy was then rushed to an emergency vet where it was discovered that his pelvis was fractured in 3 places with other smaller fractures surrounding this, his back leg was completely dislocated along with other injuries. Teddy was immediately admitted to the vet and we were to learn that he had to be transferred to a specialist vet in London for an operation to put him back together again. Sadly on Sunday evening Teddy deteriorated and it was touch and go if he would survive the night. We were all on a knife edge hoping Teddy would make it through. I was dreading the next message I received from Sophie. Happily, I got the news that Teddy had made it through the night and was ready to be transferred for his operation.
Thanks to the absolute skill of a vet Teddy has been put back together! But of course this has come at a cost. Teddy is insured but the insurance has only covered a fraction of the cost. Because Teddy is a rescue dog Sophie & George were ony able get limited insurance as the insurance companies don't know the dog's full history. This has resulted in Sophie & George incurring a £12,000 bill and rising as Teddy will also need physio and hydro therapy going forward.
Sophie & George are just like any couple. They are working full time and struggling to make ends meet. This was a horrible accident that absolutely devasted them. But Teddy is able to make a full recovery and he deserves all the love that Sophie & George have for him.
We know hard and challenging times are financially at the moment. But we are asking if we can give a little bit of support to fellow villagers and their beloved little dog Teddy. However little you can afford will help. Thank you so much.
