Miriam, or MinnaZimm to many of us, has been a tremendous ally in our goal of providing clean water for God's children in Guatemala for many, many years. She has traveled the country from border to border with her water teams, helping in so many ways. From arranging schedules, to booking trips, translating, tour guide, friend, teacher, and so much more. If we needed help- she has been there.
Now- she needs our help. Miriam has recently been diagnosed with an advanced stage of cancer. Her doctor has suggested a treatment through private channels, in order to better the chances of a favorable outcome. Yes- there is some variety of government treatment available, but those of us who've traveled those routes know that the delays and actual treatments are not likely to help us in our quest.
So- With an initial estimate north of $5,000 to get started, plus incidentals as always occur, plus the reality that her work must slow or stop, we need funds. Jason Perkey from Texas and I (Richard Smith from Tennessee) are asking for your help to raise $8,000 to get this treatment underway AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
Prayers are of course our first concern. Secondly- please share this with your friends and interested acquaintances so that we can start moving forward again with getting treatments underway!
In her own words, we share this from Miriam-
Unfortunately, this message isn’t a happy one. I am writing it to share my anguish with the hope of receiving your support.
On August 2018, I went to pick up lab results. When the doctor explained them, it sent me back 30 years ago when my sister gave us the news about her cancer; by then this word only meant death.
Even though nowadays the fight against cancer goes on and there is no one I know who can say that do not have a friend or relative who has battled this terrible illness, it is still a frightening word.
For five months, I went by myself with this burden through all the analysis I needed, looking for the less expensive way, and reading everything I could about it. Trying to find the best solution before I give the news to my family to diminish the pain and concerns for them. I also looked for advice with friends who are doctors and have their specialty on this matter I found that the best option for cervical cancer is the hysterectomy. There are two treatments cervix conization and cryotherapy to delay the advance of it. The less expensive is cryotherapy, which I am following while I put together the money to pay for the surgery in a private hospital.
It was very tough to tell this to my family and still only the closest ones know about it, just imagine how hard it is to tell my friends and everybody. I have been always willing to help others but to ask help for myself it is another story.
I am not covered by health insurance, I feel scared of public hospital after the experience I lived with their mistakes and so much pain I suffered from my leg accident. This is why I am humbly requesting for your financial support. I am grateful to every kind donor that chooses to contribute for my surgery expenses.
Blessings,
Miriam
