Peace and Grace,

I’m Sista Zock (Zakiah Modeste).  I am graciously asking for support for my dear friend, brother, workout buddy and band mate Russell Carter, who recently underwent Open Heart Surgery.

A little over a month ago, I went to hear him play his regular Sunday gig at Harlem’s American Legion.  I was late and the set finished.  He was sitting in the corner slumped over looking out of sorts and softly complained back pain. I asked him if he stretched his legs, as we just worked out a few days prior; he ran two miles and did a workout with me. He said he may go to the hospital.  I told him to keep me posted as we had a gig the Saturday coming.

I really did not think it was serious based on our workout history.  Monday morning I reached out to him, he was in the hospital and told me his blood pressure was high and he should be home soon. Russ often presents like an easy going person who doesn’t want people to fuss over him ( yall who l him know what I mean). Harlem hospital even had him stand in line waiting to get treated.

Tuesday came Wednesday came and went and Friday I reached out to his brother who informed me that he had to have Open Heart Surgery. That Monday Harlem Hospital rushed him to Bellevue Hospital for Emergency Surgery. The issue was an Aortic Dissection which required Ascending Aorta Repair (open heart surgery).

Moving forward, Russell is on a great road to recovery as the doctors are amazed at his improvements.  Nonetheless his sternum had to be broken to get to his heart of Gold.  He cannot currently lift anything over 7lbs placing him out of commission for some time . Being a drummer this is going to take some rest and recovery also require him to miss gainful employment as his performing and teaching  are put on hold.

Russ is an integral part of my band and also many others, not to mention a phenomenal dedicated Drummer, Teacher, Composer, Producer, Loving Father and all-around good Brother.  He has NYC living expenses that will not rest in addition his beautiful sun “Soul-Justice”, whom he supports and could use your assistance.

I’m sure you could feel the love I have for my brother through this post! No amount is too small and please prayers are always welcome, in addition sharing this fundraising initiative would be much appreciated.
