Let's Make It Happen - Fundraiser to Build a School in Malawi

‘Let’s Make it Happen’ marks a unique venture which involves uniting communities, both locally and globally, to fund the building of a secondary school in Malawi, a developing country.

This campaign originates from a recent visit to Malawi, where I witnessed first hand the poverty crisis that engulfs this country.  Malnourished babies and children struggling to survive, orphanages attempting to take care of children with limited resources and children walking severe distances every day in order to try and get any form of education so that they can better themselves. Despite the hardships that many of these incredible children live with, one of the first thing that I noticed was the positivity of their outlook on life. These children are eager to learn and progress in the education system even though the resources to do so are extremely limited or simply not in place at all.

Education and skills development are cornerstones for a productive workforce in any country and to maximise this productive potential requires investment in education from basic to tertiary level. Majority of Malawi’s population is made up of a population below 18 years of age; a population size that will make up the workforce in 10 years’ time. With strategic investment in their education and skills development, we are assured that we can nurture a future generation that will be critical agents for positive socioeconomic change in the country.

My aim is to bring people on this social venture where we work towards one united goal - coming together as school communities and wider, to raise awareness surrounding developing countries and Global Citizenship Education. The aim is to construct this Post Primary School, while also establishing lasting connections with a rural community on the other side of the world, our world.

With the funds raised throughout the ‘Let’s Make It Happen’ Campaign, we will build a two-classroom Post Primary school along with two pit Latrines. The building size is 135m2 while the toilets are 3m2 a piece. This Secondary school will be finished with chalkboards and desks and will be located near the existing Nursery and Primary schools in Namikhate, Malawi. The local government will equip the school with required educators and managerial staff. Any donors will be brought along the complete journey of building this school. After the school is built, enrollment figures, number of teachers, grades taught and drop out rates will be recorded and shared publicly.

This campaign is being run by myself here in Ireland, but I am also being supported by my uncle Robert Loughlin and his partner Tikhala Itaye, who both live and work in the development sector in Malawi. Together, along with the support of our friends, families and local communities, we strive to achieve this goal and empower the youth of Namikhate.
