School Wellness Educator and Yoga Teacher Training

I am trying to raise money to cover expenses for a professional development course that is offered to public educators to strengthen and care for the whole educator. I will grow my practice in how to use mindfulness, yoga, and social-emotional learning as a vehicle for healing and learning in our classroom and community. I will learn and grow through conversation and collaboration with like-minded people who are building community well-being and resilience right alongside one another.

With this program, I am looking forward to bringing holistic care and well- being to an often marginalized community of alternative high school students labeled "at-promise".  (I say "at-promise" because the usual term "at-risk" labels the students negatively and I want to create an expectation of success instead of failure for our most vulnerable students.) Yoga and mindfulness practices are not often available for people at low socio-economic levels, and I would like to change that. It is my goal to instill tools to promote self-esteem and provide engagement to my students, and my school's community,  in a socially responsive way.

As an educator, my students' mental and physical well-being is always at the forefront of my mind. I am continually looking for ways to incorporate mindfulness, meditation, and yoga practices into my work with students. I have led whole-class mindfulness sessions, and continually teach and practice different coping strategies (including deep breathing, visual imagery, and positive self-talk) in my class, but I believe I have much room for growth.

This year, I started a program that focused on students who were socially promoted. My students attended school every day in middle school but weren't finding success academically. At the end of their 8th-grade year, all students had a GPA of less than 2.0, with the lowest being a 1.17. They are faced daily with the struggles of poverty, violence, and low expectations. Through perseverance, hard work, and skills they've gained from social and emotional learning and mindfulness, my students have developed a passion for math and have shown growth. All students have improved their GPAs to be above 2.0, a handful are now above a 3.0 and the highest being at 3.67.

The funding provided will help add another tool toward the social-emotional work of being human in a community. I anticipate that my future students will be very appreciative of the opportunity to learn yoga and mindfulness practices that will help them navigate life choices and decisions that will guide their wonderful selves into adulthood.

**The cost of the professional development is $1,740. (The goal is higher to cover the cost that gofundme will be deducting with their fees.
