Hi, my name is Emily and I am raising money for my cat Moonshine's unexpected medical bills. The total so far is an estimated $6500 and will continue to increase should she need further hospitalization. Any contributions to this go fund me will go directly towards her ver bill at Paramount 24hr Animal Hospital here in Calgary, AB.
Moonshine is my baby girl, my muffin, my moonbear. She is a gentle, sweet tempered 12 year old torteshell cat with so much love to give in her little heart. She has a love of plastic bags and boxes, licking in your ears and sleeping on my shoulders every night, cuddling with her brother Frisker. She loves blueberries, to chase her tail and has an obsession with door frames. She is the most affectionate cat with the loudest purr I have ever heard. As other pet owners will understand, my animals are more than just pet's to me - they are my friends, my family and my whole world. There is nothing I wouldn't do for them.
They are always there for us when we need them, giving life changing love and support through the touch of the paw, a lick or a purr without them ever needing to say a word. Which is why it is so important to be there for them with the same love, care and support they deserve when they need it most. Right now Moony really needs all the love and support I can give her.
I noticed Moonys behavior change on Thursday evening when she didn't finish her dinner. This is not normal for her and I tried to monitor on my pet cube camera while at work on Friday but she hid all day out of sight. I brought Moony in to the animal hospital on Friday evening (the 13th of course) when upon return home from work I noticed she had vomited multiple times throughout the day, her food had remained untouched, she would not purr when I touched her, she went and hid away from me and was breathing rapidly. This was all extremely out of character. I knew something was very wrong.
The vet said she was nauseous (bobbing her head up and down), dehydrated, had a fever, and was breathing rapidly with a tense uncomfortable belly. They did xrays and bloodwork which suggested pancreatitis, a common condition in cats and she stayed the night under 24hr care.
She continued to refuse food and water (only once did she eat a little tuna with water briefly on Sunday morning). Her fever broke briefly for a few hours but has since returned, then given more IV, fluids, anti nausea meds and appetite stimulants. An ultrasound was done and found an enlarged pancreatic lining and slow down of her intestines which confirmed pancreatitis.
I was able to book a visit with her Saturday night and sat alone in a room holding her crying for almost an hour. She looked haggard and stressed, her normally soft and fluffy fur was a mess. They had her wrapped up in a fluffy blanket purrito style, her little IV taped to her leg. She recognized me right away but still seemed stressed and confused. By the end of the visit and a box of kleexex she was purring, seemed calmer, giving me headbutts and allowing me to gently rub her shaved belly just the way she likes. Something in her settled down and she seemed a little more at ease. Even the vet techs noticed a change in her demeanor after the visit. The power of love and affection y'all ❤️. I reluctantly gave her back. She stayed overnight Saturday.
Sunday was more the same. She had perked up a bit and I was asked to come visit, bringing treats and food that she likes hoping she'd finally try to eat with me in the room. The most I got from her was to lick a little sauce off my finger. Her paw with the IV in it was swollen, she was anxious, could not relax, distressed and drooling at the sight of food but still refused to eat. They are now putting her on a feeding tube and she is staying under 24hr care once again for the third night in a row. The hope is that the feeding tube will flush out all the bad stuff and alleviate some discomfort so she can start to get better.
Unfortunately when it rains it pours. During the night my other cat Frisker began vomiting as well and has also not been himself. He has been having trouble keeping food down, periodically vomiting it back up, though he still has an interest in eating and begs for human food as usual. He is extremely thirsty but also throwing up water from drinking too much. He continues to purr and snuggle lots, though something about him seems somber and "off". Perhaps he is missing his sister, it's hard to say. As of right now because he is still eating and drinking some his symptoms are of a lower concern. If he continues to vomit I need to bring him in immediately. He has an appointment Monday afternoon for a check to make sure that he's okay too.
There is no known cause for pancreatitis in cats, some expirience it mildly, some severe like Moonbear and can stay in hospital for up to a week. Some cats will only have it once and then never again. That is the hope.
So far, the total for moonys medicine, xrays, bloodwork, ultrasound, sedation, feeding tube and three days in hospital is sitting at $6500. This number is an estimate from the vet and will continue to go up if she needs to stay in hospital. Not to mention if Frisker may also need to be admitted.
The past three days have been incredibly hard mentally, physically and financially. My mental health especially has taken a nose dive. At the advice of friends I have started this go fund me to potentially help alleviate/off set at least some of the costs of Moonshine's care. Anyone who follows me online or has their own fur babies likely knows and has seen just how much I love both of my cats. I feel utterly lost without my Moon not sleeping on my shoulders at night, that little missing weight feels like a hundred pounds.
THANK YOU all so much for the words of encouragement and support over the past few days. It has helped immensely getting through this very emotional and difficult time ❤️ Any compassion you are able to extended for Moonys care through this go fund me would mean the world to me.
Please come home soon Moonbear, you are loved and missed beyond measure❤️
