Family, friends and neighbors,
As some of you may know my cousin Mark’s wife Iryna is originally from Ukraine.
The news of the Russian invasion of Ukraine has shocked the world, but it has affected Iryna and her family in a deeply intense and personal way. Having fled Kyiv a few days after the invasion began Iryna’s sister Alla, her husband Dima, their young son Arteom, Iryna’s mother Nina and Iryna’s father Viktor eventually made it to the Polish border. After gut wrenching goodbyes, Iryna’s elderly mother, sister and nephew continued on foot to Poland. Iryna’s father and brother-in-law stayed behind to fight for their land and their country.
Nina, Alla and Arteom remain in Poland with the millions of other Ukrainian women and children refugees. They have lost their homes, lost their livelihood, are alone in a foreign country and are separated from their family members. They have nowhere else to go. The heartbreak and emotional devastation for their family is impossible for us to comprehend.
Iryna’s family needs long-term housing and financial support while in Poland. Mark and Iryna are working hard to get them to California where they will be safe. They have hired an immigration attorney, will be flying back and forth to Poland and are exploring all options to get them to California.
The almost 3 million women and children refugees have no fathers or husband to support or protect them. They do not speak Polish, they can’t get jobs, and the kids need to be in school. The exploitation that will occur without help, will be a humanitarian crisis that the world has not seen since World War II.
Please help by donating money to support Iryna’s family. Our goal is to raise $50,000 which we think is adequate to sustain Iryna’s family for 6 months in Poland, and will cover housing, food, clothing, medical care, legal assistance, and transportation.
