Stephen is the epitome of joy. His positive energy and joy is always evident in his approach to life. I am amazed at how he thrives in spite of the rough hand dealt to him early in life.
He loves school, even though reading and math are very hard for him. An orthoptist just conducted an extensive evaluation of his vision, and a lot of his troubles are a result of his eyes not tracking properly.
His eyesight is very poor, meaning that his eyes don't cooperate with each other. He occasionally has double vision and the words and numbers float around on the page. We thought that he had a learning disability that could be conquered with special ed classes, but they are just a band-aid. Reading more than two pages results in him rubbing his eyes, complaining that he hurts, and sleepiness.
Now that he is in sixth grade, the expectations of him in school have increased. He needs to be able to read for himself easily. Stephen has always had to work really hard at this, and expends so much effort to make the words behave that he forgets the meaning of the text by the end of the passage.
There is a therapy to correct much of his issues, and we are very excited that Stephen may be able to read for himself, instead of relying upon Dad reading aloud to feed his voracious appetite for a great story. Unfortunately, our insurance deductible is very high and we need to bear the cost of the therapy entirely. It is a hefty bill, and we need your help. To cover seven to eight months of weekly therapy, we need $4600. Would you be willing to help offset this? We are grateful for any amount pledged.
