Hello fellow wildlife warriors!
After many years visiting a site in our local state forest, an area of interest has been begging for our attention far too long. A large family of vulnerable Forest Red-Tailed Black Cockatoos visit this area daily, and we recently counted the visiting family is more than 60 strong! The waterhole is man-made due to road construction through an area of floodplains and therefore has a long history of surface runoff contamination and leachate issues.
The family of Red-Tail Blacks are using this water as a drinking source, and a team of citizen scientists have planned to remediate the water source to protect the health of this large family of songline custodians.
With your help, we plan on conducting surface water sampling for a suite of potential pollutants at the site to assist with appropriate planning for remediation efforts. The analytes to be tested for include metals and forever chemicals, oils and greases as well as physical parameters such as pH, turbidity and EC to name a few. This will help us to inform filtration requirements and native restoration efforts in the near future, as well as remaining compliant with DWER guidelines.
If you would like to be part of the conservation of our very special Red-tail cockatoo population and many other local fauna species, consider donating today!
Any help is greatly appreciated.
