VyVy & Paul's Wedding Fund for Camp RYSE
Tax deductible
Dear dear friend,
In lieu of a wedding registry, we invite you to give generously to Camp RYSE (Refugee Youth Solidarity through Education), which serves the many refugee youth and families of Providence, RI.
For the past nine summers, Camp RYSE has brought together hundreds of newly-arrived refugee youth for a five-week day camp that fosters community, learning, healing, and joy among K-12 refugee youth who share common experiences of displacement and resettlement and are given a space to be their full selves. Camp is a truly magical place that makes a huge impact on the development and literacy of children, employs refugee high school- and college-aged youth, provides critical childcare for refugee parents as they adjust to life in the US, and is a powerfully transformative experience for anyone who has been a part of this community.
Paul grew up just outside of Providence and lived in this amazing little city for four years attending Brown medical school. I lived in Providence for nine years, and for more than half of that time, my whole world revolved around the Camp RYSE community, serving as Camp Director for two years and "Camp Grandma" (aka advisor, driver, and cheerleader) for the remaining time. Camp RYSE also has a sister program, BRYTE, which provides 1-on-1 in-home academic tutoring to refugee youth; I tutored two young women through this program, and they remain the coolest and most badass girls I know. When I had to leave Providence to begin residency, Paul remained in Providence and was my connection to Camp RYSE and BRYTE, tutoring one of my former students, and falling in love himself with this incredible, resilient community.
We live in California now, each completing medical residency. But our hearts are in Providence, and someday we're going to go back to help get camp into a more sustainable, self-sufficient place. In the meantime, this scrappy, entirely youth-run, miracle of an organization raises the funds every year to supply our classrooms, pay our majority-refugee youth staff, and make the magic happen. Your gift toward camp would be the most meaningful wedding gift we could possibly imagine.
This GoFundMe directs money to the equally amazing Refugee Dream Center, the fiscal sponsor and partner of Camp RYSE. 100% of donations through this GoFundMe will support Camp RYSE.
With enormous love,
VyVy
Me and Paul with the crew. This was taken at the Providence airport the day I left. WE CRIED RIVERS but it's okay because Camp RYSE is forever.
