Heart Transplant for Richard "Richie" Murphy

Richie has battled congenital heart disease since birth, surviving multiple open-heart surgeries and emergency procedures over the years. Born with HLHS (Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome), his battle was never going to be easy. He continues to fight unforeseen obstacles, that have come his way. Before the age of 25, Richie underwent multiple open-heart surgeries, had 2 steel rods placed in his back, survived being struck by lightning and most recently suffered from a heart attack in 2021. His latest challenge is awaiting a Heart Transplant at Boston Children’s Hospital.

After his heart attack in 2021, Richie was in and out of hospitals for months, only being home for 3 or 4 days at a time before being readmitted to the hospital. This continued for several months, which led to Richie being unable to work. When he was finally able to return home, part of the treatment plan was to have visiting

nurses come to the home for additional care and weekly appointments in either Boston or Portland. This lasted for 6 months.

In October 2022, due to his medical needs, the team of doctors at Boston Children’s Hospital advised Richie that the best place for him to be, was at the hospital, as he could have around-the-clock care. On October 23, 2022, he “officially moved in” to Boston Children’s, to begin the wait of receiving a transplant.

In true fashion, Richie has made the best of his time there and continues to make others laugh. From hiding a Chucky doll around his room at Halloween to dressing as ‘The Grinch’ at Christmas which kept the doctors and nurses on their toes. There is not one person that walks into his room that doesn’t walk out with a smile because of something he has said or done.

Even in his fragile state, he continually shows us every day, that he is the strongest person we've ever known, and he is not ready to go anywhere. He is a true heart warrior and a blessing to us all.
