My name is Wanda Atkins and I am a single mother of 2 beautiful daughters. The late Briana Bigby is the reason for this petition.
Briana J. Bigby was born and raised in Roxbury, MA. Briana was strong, full of joy and loved life. Briana was a self-motivated individual and a very hard worker who was determined to be someone that made a difference in her community.
Briana matriculated through the (METCO) Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity school system graduating from Concord Carlisle Regional High School, Concord MA (2009). She attended Morgan State University, Baltimore, MD with the vision of pursuing an advanced degree in Social Work.
At the age of 13, Briana carried her spirit of community service from her leadership roles at the Yawkey Boys and Girls Club into the real world. She worked for the (BCYF) Boston Center for Youth and Families as a Safety Peer Leader and hosted the Girls Citywide Summits. Briana became a member of (GLITS) Girls Leading in Tough Situations and (GTA) Girls Taking Action. Briana also worked for (GLC) Girls Leadership Corp where she was a camp counselor teaching young girls about nutrition and personal safety.
By the age of 15, Briana’s dream was to open a group home for troubled teens. When Briana returned home from college, she always maintained two full-time jobs while taking classes. She was working for Citizens Bank as a Banker when a job presented itself to her. Briana felt this was an ideal job opportunity to get her started working in a field she loved. Although it was an overnight position, she graciously accepted and worked both positions. She worked at Citizens bank by day and for Communities for People Group Home over night until her untimely death.
Briana was living a life of promise and full of potential so it obviously came as a tragic shock when on June 1, 2013, she became a victim of a senseless drive by shooting killing her instantly. What hurts the most is that this was the very thing she was working so hard to hopefully one day create change through education. Briana was my first born and my world. In honor of Briana's mission for service and education, a scholarship fund was established in her name to help support our next generation of leaders looking to further their high school education preferably in the social services field, but not limited to.
Funds incorporated through the Yawkey Boys and Girls Club of Roxbury, 115 Warren Street, Boston, MA 02119. ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE and greatly appreciated.
As Briana herself said... “I became an active member of my community at age 13. My sophomore and junior years in school were the hardest in which I lost 12 people I knew to violence in Boston MA. That had a major impact on my life and my grades. I realize then what has hurt me has only made me stronger. I vowed to myself that I would succeed in any career path I chose. I plan to continue my work as a leader and activist in my community. With all of my past experiences put together, I feel as though I have evolved as a person and my future success is unlimited.”
