This gofundme page is formed to assist with Mike Gunlock's financial obligations post-transplant surgery. Mike hasn't been able to work due to this illness for the past 2 years and Sandy is having to go on extended family medical leave to help with his rehab full time. After Mike is released from the ICU, he will be moved to a hospital campus rehab facility where he and Sandy will be living together in an apartment for an extended time until he is well enough to return home to Cincinnati. We expect the rehabilitation in Columbus to take three to four months. The money will go directly towards medical costs and associated living expenses.
The backstory: Mike has had many health struggles throughout his adult life, culminating in a diagnosis of sarcoidosis of the lungs approximately ten years ago. Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that can affect many different organs of the body. In Mike's case, the disease has only attacked his lungs. His lung function has deteriorated to less than 30% forcing him to be on oxygen 24/7. Due to this decreased lung function putting excess strain on Mike's heart, the doctors recommended a lung transplant. After months of testing, paperwork and red tape Mike was finally approved for the lung transplant and added to the list in early November 2016.
Any donation is greatly appreciated to help lessen this burden for the Gunlocks. We expect the medical expenses to exceed $50,000, potentially approaching $75,000. We will be updating Mike's caring bridge website with information as he progresses through his recovery. The site can be found here: https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/michaelgunlock
