As a third-year Psychology major at Hampton University, I have been afforded an opportunity to volunteer with One Heart Source, an organization dedicated to empowering marginalized communities globally through service learning and education. One Heart Source promotes its mission by designing, implementing, and evolving social justice programs that empower positive education and health outcomes in concert with the communities they serve in places such as Jamaica and South Africa. I have been blessed by being accepted as a volunteer into the Cape Town, South Africa Program scheduled for May 2017.
It has been a life-long dream to use my passion for serving others and my love of adventure to volunteer abroad. This opportunity will allow me to give back and do the best I can to nurture youth in South Africa, including mentoring and training the next generation of student leaders in one of Cape Town’s most marginalized and poor communities. For me, this opportunity to volunteer is far more than completing the basic program requirements- as it is an opportunity for me to grow, serve, mentor, motivate, support, and love others whole-heartedly. I want to immerse myself in a local community and be a part of partnering with others in my field who are dedicated to collaboration, education, and strengthening young men and women globally.
As you can imagine, such an opportunity has enormous payoffs for my personal and professional growth, but such growth comes at a cost. I am reaching out to my community of family and friends to ask your support as I embark on this journey to South Africa. While I have never traveled abroad, I know this experience will be transformative, ultimately allowing me to serve others and advance my interests at a critical time in my academic career. This life-changing experience will cost a total of $2,600.
An investment in my education and development will not be wasted. As I prepare for a professional career dedicated to supporting the health and livelihoods of others in my community, One Source Heart is offering an opportunity for transformation and service that I feel compelled to complete.
