ABOUT THIS CAMPAIGN
What is the Tour Divide? Why do this race? Why raise money for PTSD? Why $2700?
The Great Divide Route is the world's longest off-pavement cycling route. It was tirelessly mapped over a 4 year span, and published in 1998 by Adventure Cycling Association, North America's premiere bicycle travel organization. The route is highlighted by long dirt roads and jeep trails that wind their way through forgotten passes of the Continental Divide. It starts on June 12th in Banff, Alberta Canada and travels through Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia, traveling south through Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico and finishing at the border of Mexico. By route's end a thru-rider will climb nearly 200,000 feet (equivalent to summiting Mount Everest from sea-level 7 times).
Divide racers must not only be conditioned to endure weeks of consecutive 12+ hour days in the saddle, they need to bring other skills to the trail. The route is unmarked requiring cyclists to follow a designated path with cue cards and/or gps devices. It travels through remote backcountry with grizzly and mountain lion density. Intervals between services are frequently 100+ miles and demand calculated food/water resupply–or else. Riders must also find shelter each night by camping along the trailside or finding occasional motels. In minutes the Rockies' dynamic mountain weather can wreak havoc on riding conditions causing delays and/or hours cylcing in the pain cave. HUP! (HardenUP)
A few years ago I watched a documentary called "Ride the Divide" and immediately knew I would attempt this challenge when I retired. I also wanted to use this race as a vehicle to support our military for voluntarily putting their lives on line for us! No matter how you feel about our involvement in various wars it comes down to the fact that our soldiers have always allowed America to remain a free and prosperous nation. One hundred percent of the money raised through this campaign will go to Pedal Against PTSD. Also 100% of monies received by this organization goes to providing bikes to our veterans. Pedal Against PTSD's goal is to empower veterans to overcome PTSD through cycling and to raise awareness to struggles of post-traumatic stress disorder. Check out their facebook page for more information.
There is no entry fee for the Tour Divide race itself so my contribution will be the preparation for the ride, the cost of eating each day, and the physical exertion of the ride. My goal is to finish the race in 30 days or less which means riding between 80 and 100 miles per day.
Go to tourdivide.org for more information about the race and you’ll be able to follow me during the race by clicking on the "Leaderboard" on the right side of the page. Type in my name (Greg Goodman) and a balloon on the map will pop up. This will give you information on my location, speed, and other data. It will also link you to a Facebook page where you may leave messages. On my Facebook page I'll be giving updates, pictures and videos when possible.
You guessed it...one dollar for each mile. Hopefully we'll go way beyond my goal amount. If we do I'll ride a mile for each dollar over 2,700 during the rest of the year!
