Im gathering funds for my friend who wishes to remains anonymous. She is a Latina, first generation, low income student at mount Holyoke. Here is what she has to say:
“I’m coming at you asking for money to survive. This isn’t for extras. I can’t keep my head above water. I don’t have family members who can support me- their situation is in fact worse than mine. They are homeless and I have no place to return to or call home other than mount Holyoke. It’s taken a lot of courage and support from friends to be able to ask for help but I know in my heart I need to because I can’t imagine another month in the situation I’m in. I can’t breathe. I’m asking for funds to help me with this:
-$120 to refill a medication I take daily. This is the cost for a one month prescription (yes, even with insurance)
-$150 for one month of groceries
-$40 for health insurance
$800 for tuition (my efc is zero but as we all know, sfs at mount Holyoke is not sympathetic to struggle)
This is the bare minimum to get me through until the end of January and into the next term. On top of this I’m asking for $600 to purchase a laptop, because I do not currently have one and am having to use a Chromebook which doesn’t run programs I need for my major.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support. If I cannot repay you in this life I will in another. I hope that my success at this college will mean my success in life. I hope that this is just a period of hardship. Like I said, my family is homeless. I am just trying to get by”
