Helping Maggie

Donation protected
Last week our family lost our patriarch to a sudden  and unexpected heart attack. He passer away suddenly while out enjoying an evening drive with our mother Maggie. Tom spent the majority of his life and career proudly serving his community as a Law Enforcement Officer. His career as an LEO spanned over 3 different decades and culminated in having served as Chief of Police for two different municipalities. During that time, he made a huge impact mentoring and overseeing the development of numerous other LEOs and fostering their careers. My father took great pride in his career and backed the blue until his last breath. He did all he could to better his community and in the end he touched on the lives of more people than we could ever know. Our mother, Maggie Curd, has had an equally long career in law enforcement from a dispatching perspective, and she stood by this man through thick and thin, providing a loving home for him to come to at the end of many long shifts - something not always easy as many spouses in the LEO community can attest to. She also has sown many deep roots throughout the greater San Antonio law enforcement community and has touched perhaps even more lives than my father did. She spent her life by his side and, as he said throughout his life, was the best thing that ever happened to him. Together, they both opened their home to anyone in need and helped to provide a second home for many of our friends throughout our child and even early adulthood. Unfortunately at the time of his passing, my father had not financially prepared my mother to live in his absence. While he lived a good, hard-fought life to the ripe age of 71, my mother is still somewhat of a spring chicken at 58. She greatly depended on the social security and retirement income that our father brought in to make it through the monthly bills. In the wake of his loss, the federal guidelines will take away his social security from her until she turns 60, which has left her at the base of what feels like an impossible mountain of debt that is left on her now that he is gone. We are starting this campaign in order to honor both our father and mother, to help her get through this very trying time, and get her into a position where she can be in a better position to enjoy the latter stages of her life, alone for the first time in over 36 years. Just as our father was, our mother is equally opposed to ever reaching out, asking for, or especially accepting help. However she is now in a position where we need to make that call for her. We have been overwhelmed by the amount of people who are in mourning at his passing, and the requests to start a donation fund in order to help my mother overcome his loss, both emotionally and financially.
So in this season of giving, if Tom or Maggie ever touched your life, be it directly or indirectly through their children or service in the community, and you find yourself able to, then please donate to our cause and help to see our mother get back on her feet. We don't ask for this out of pity or sympathy but simply as a way of "paying it back". Thank you so much for your time, condolences and efforts, and please help to keep Tom alive through your memories of him, and by assisting his wife in a time of great need.
