Since Birth, my uncle Jose Medina has been fighting with health issues and has had over 39 surgeries, but with the help of God and the support of his family, he was able to overcome the pain and suffering. In 1998 his kidneys began to fail him, which resulted in him having to go to dialysis for nearly 7 years, 3 times a week for 3 to 4 hours to remove water retention in his body which caused swelling and more pain.
In 2003 when I was 18 years old, as I was helping with cleaning the church I assisted at, I heard my father speaking to someone on the phone and thought it was my uncle Jose, when he hung up I asked how he was doing? My father told me the condition he was in, so I asked him what could be done to help him? As I was listening to my father, I felt a great impulse or as a voice whisper into my ear that I should help him. I called my uncle and ask him what I needed to do to see if I was compatible to donate my kidney to him, although he didn't take me seriously he still told me what I needed to do. 3 days after I had spoken to him, I let my parents know about my decision in helping my uncle, even though they were a bit afraid, they supported me in my decision. I then got in my car with a friend (now brother-in-law) who joined me, and leaving everything and everyone I loved, I headed to Houston Texas where my uncle lived at that time. In 2004 after turning 19, we finally went to the hospital to do the transplant. The surgery was successful! For 17 years his new kidney had been healthy and strong.
Just recently he began to have a lot of pain and went to the hospital. He was told his kidney has stones that need to be removed immediately and that there is a 50% chance his kidney may live or die. The cost for the surgery is for about $50,000.00, but due to him having constant pain, my uncle can no longer work to pay for the cost.
I believe we have been blessed with being healthy and waking up everyday to enjoy our life. I also believe we all have a heart willing to help those in need. I ask that you help my uncle to be able to try and save his kidney and be able to feel that same blessing be brought to his life by giving to help him get the surgery needed. Aunque no me tomó en serio, me dijo lo que tenía que hacer. 3 días después de haber hablado con él, les dije a mis padres mi decisión de ayudar a mi tío, aunque tenían un poco de miedo, ellos me apoyaron en mi decisión. Luego me subí a mi auto con un amigo (ahora cuñado) que me acompaño, y dejando todo y a todos los que amaba, me dirigí a Houston, Texas, donde vivía mi tío en ese tiempo. En 2004, después de cumplir 19 años, finalmente fuimos al hospital para hacer el trasplante. ¡La cirugía fue exitosa! Durante 17 años, su nuevo riñón había estado sano y fuerte.
Recientemente comenzó a tener mucho dolor y fue al hospital. Yo Creo que hemos sido bendecidos con estar saludables y despertar todos los días para disfrutar de nuestra vida. También creo que todos tenemos un corazón dispuesto a ayudar a los necesitados. Les pido que ayuden a mi tío a poder tratar de salvar su riñón y poder sentir esa misma bendición en su vida al dar para ayudarlo a someterse a la cirugía necesaria.
