Dog Hit By Car Needs Your Help

Donation protected

This was taken right after a found him and got him loaded in the car.

On Sunday 9/27 in the morning at about 8:30, I found a dog hit in the ditch off of Highway 35 between Benton and Sheridan. I saw white out of the corner of my eye and stopped to find a beautiful dog laying down but alert and looking around but unable to get up. As I got closer, I saw that his entire back leg was covered in fire ants biting at his open wounds. I rushed back to my car and grabbed a blanket and brushed all the ants off of him and called the police to see if they could help. While we were waiting he was very calm and let me pet him. His leg was at an odd angle so I could tell it was broken. The neighbors saw me standing out there and came over to see what was going on. Their dogs approached him and he wagged his tail and sniffed back but didn't react or snarl. We found the blood spot on the road where he was hit and it was dry so it likely happened late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. When the officer arrived he determined the best thing to do would be take him to the city pound to see if they could help. The neighbors helped move the blanket under him like a sling and moved him into the back of my car. When we arrived at the pound, we found that they couldn't take him on. So the shelter supervisor and the officer went to work calling every person they could think of that might help. Being Sunday, not many people answered and even fewer had help to offer. Finally, Officer Browning found a list of rescues and called every number there. Eventually we found help from Last Chance Arkansas and they agreed to take him on and told me to get him to the ER vet right away. I was so relieved he was finally going to get help! So we rushed to Maumelle where they gave him a shot of morphine and some take home pain meds for the night. Little did we know, we were in for a rough night. We found when we got him home that not only did he have a lot of road burn but also a compound fracture that left an open hole in his leg that bled like crazy every time he moved. Poor Hurley, as we have come to call him, was in a lot of pain but only truly cried when we had to go to the bathroom and couldn't stand to go. He has been through so much. Thoughout this ordeal he was moved at least 6 times and every time we moved him it was beyond painful for him and he would scream in pain but not once did he growl or bite. He struggled very little and was sweet as can be throughout the entire night. In the morning, I took him to Doubletree Veterinary Clinic in Little Rock. After explaining the situation they came out to the car and sedated him before moving him again to keep him from suffering more pain. They took him back to x-ray and found Hurley has not one but two broken back legs. Our poor baby was suffering so much pain and had been amazingly sweet and tolerant through all of it. The vet explained that two broken legs is not only a huge expense but also a tremendous amount of work to keep the dog comfortable, help him move around and keep the casts clean while he heals, etc. After a tearful conversation with Last Chance Arkansas they graciously decided to take all of that on and agreed to go ahead and fix his legs and save his life even though the cost would literally wipe out their entire bank account to help other animals. Carrie Kessler with LCA is an angel and has aggreed to be his care taker and take on the enormous undertaking of nursing him back to health. Hurley is now safe and being kept comfortable and relaxed at the vet until Wednesday morning when they will do the extensive surgeries to fix both legs. They found he is heartworm negative which is great news but he was anemic so they are treating him for that as well. They think he is between 3 and 5 and may even be a low content wolf hybrid! Please consider donating to Hurley's care so we can save his legs and life and also keep Last Chance Arkansas from draining their account so they can continue to save the lives of animals in need like Hurley. Thank you so much for your help and for caring about this sweet little boy. He truly is special and he is going to make someone an amazing pet as soon as we can get him healed. Please consider donating if you can but if you can't please share his story. We can never say thank you enough to all the people who helped save this sweet boy from a terrible and lonely death. Hopefully he now has a bright future.

Knocked out on the table after getting both legs splinted. The muzzle is precautionary when sedated and working on broken bones. He was out cold and has not tried to bite once.
Getting some love from the amazing staff at Doubletree
In his crate at the vet where he will stay untill his surgery to repair his legs. They are taking great care of him and keeping him comfortable and quiet.
On the table getting fixed up.
His x-ray showing the breaks. The lower break is the compound fracture that left the big open wound. It is the worst and we won't know until they get in there if they will definitely be able to save the leg or not.
Just put on the table from the car.

In the back of the vehicle waiting at the vet. We tried to make a makeshift splint for him to help stabalize that leg but it was not much help. As you can see, he is calm sweet anyway. You can see the hole from the compound fracture here above the wrapping. The upper left leg break shown by the vet. Again, he is knocked out for all this.
You can really see the lower right leg break in this picture.
Poor baby. :(
