“Bet on Beth”
Hi! Thanks for taking the time to visit; I am Jessica Phillips, Beth's sister. I created this page to raise funds for a handicap accessible van and bathroom/shower modifications for my sister. In January 2014, Beth’s life changed abruptly after a horrific car accident. Beth suffered a traumatic brain injury, numerous broken bones, and later a stroke which paralyzed her left side. Since her wreck, Beth has undergone nearly 20 surgeries with many months of hospitalization and therapy. An internal shunt prevents extra fluid and pressure from collecting around her brain. Due to the paralysis, Beth is dependent on others for most of her activities of daily living. Beth lives with our Mom, Nancy, and Step-dad, George, at their home in Laurens, SC. She has an awesome care-giver, Rhonda, who keeps her happy and safe while Mom and George are at work. They’re all doing a great job meeting Beth’s needs, although it’s physically and mentally exhausting. A Hoyer lift is used to get her into and out of her wheelchair for mobility around the house. Beth is bedbound for baths as the current bathrooms are not wheelchair accessible. She has only been out of the house for doctor’s appointment by ambulance transport (this costs $500+ out of pocket each trip). Our family does not currently own a wheelchair accessible vehicle and cannot safely transport her in their existing vehicles. These issues make day-to-day life and care of Beth more difficult. After nearly a year and a half “trapped” in the hospital or at home, it’s time for Beth and family to get these much needed items.

Beth has always been active and independent, which makes being homebound particularly difficult. Her primary entertainment and socialization is through Facebook on her iPad and watching television game shows. I am determined for Beth to regain mobility and social interaction by getting a safe, accessible wheelchair van. Before her wreck, Beth owned/maintained a home, worked full-time, exercised, socialized and loved her pet bunny rabbits. She also volunteered regularly at a local bunny rescue and fundraised for cancer research. She’s an adventurous, go-getter by nature. Beth has spent a summer in Spain, completed mud runs and half-marathons, and even hiked Manchu Picchu! Additionally, Beth’s first nephew, Thomas, was born just two weeks before her accident. Beth had many plans for herself and Thomas. This van will help her keep those plans and lift her spirits! Beth wants to go to church, restaurants, movies, parks, malls, and the beach. She misses fun activities that any 28 year old enjoys. Not only are the wheelchair van and bathroom updates going to improve Beth’s quality of life, but our Mom’s and step-dad’s too. They’ve gone from the freedom of an empty nest to full-time caregivers of an adult child. They would love to go to church or visit us in Charlotte again as a family. All donations made through this page will go directly to my sister and I hope and pray that we can get her what she needs. #BetOnBeth
