Hi, my name is Aaron Jay Appleby, and this September I’ll be taking on the Great North Run in memory of my Grandad, and in support of St Teresa’s Hospice – a charity that means so much to me and my family.
In 2009, my Grandad was diagnosed with lung cancer and given a devastating prognosis. He battled the illness with incredible strength and bravery for three years. During one of the hardest times in our lives, St Teresa’s Hospice gave him a week of respite care that brought comfort, dignity, and peace – not just to him, but to all of us as a family.
The kindness, compassion, and support we received during that time is something I’ll never forget. It’s hard to put into words what that meant to us – having a place where he could be cared for with love, and where we could breathe, even if just for a moment.
St Teresa’s Hospice provides essential care for people with life-limiting illnesses, completely free of charge – but they rely on donations to keep going. That’s why I’ve chosen to run this race in my Grandad’s memory, and to help give back to the hospice that gave us those moments of peace when we needed them most.
If you’re able to support me, no matter how small the donation, I’d be incredibly grateful. Every pound raised helps make sure other families can receive the same care, support, and a holistic environment when they need it most.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story – and for supporting this cause so close to my heart.❤️
