Help my friend Vuyani raise funds to buy instruments and teach music to the kids in the township of Philippi, Cape Town (South Africa).
A brief story:
My name is Alex, I am a musician from the city of Barcelona. In 2014 I was living in Cape Town and I played in the beautiful African Pop band 'Native Young'. That experience changed my life forever. Vuyani Dyoli was one of the members of the band. Playing with him completely transformed the way I understand rhythm, groove and being in a trance. Through him and through african music I realized that this art is much greater that I thought.
Music is liberation, and it's a sacred force that brings humans together.
Today Vuyani lives in Philippi, one of the townships near Cape Town. We haven't seen each other since 2016, but we call each other up every now and then. From what he tells me the situation in the township has become extremely intense. A lot of violence and a constant feeling of unsafety. And kids growing up in very difficult conditions.
For many years Vuyani has been teaching music to the children in his community. Teaching them to play marimbas, rhythm, and social skills. Because he deeply believes that teaching children music from a young age can change the way they relate to themselves and the world.
He told me he has a dream to open up his own Music School to continue to accompany the kids in their growth, and that he's trying to save up money to buy a set of marimbas be able to have more freedom.
I got very emotional from hearing about his dream, and very excited with the idea of supporting him. On our last call I told him: 'man I'm gonna get you those marimbas, I will speak to my community and figure it out'.
So I am making this fundraiser to ask for your help. I would love for you to help me support Vuyani's dream to open a music school to teach much to the kids in his community.
The first 3000€ will go directly to buying a set of 4 marimbas, handmade by a local instrument maker. Anything beyond that helps make this dream actually possible. Transport, logistics and creating a safe space where the kids can learn and play.
