Hope for Karah Grace

On December 10, 2018, Kraig and Sarah Kniphfer, five months pregnant with their first child, went for a typical sonogram. Normally, this is a joyous occasion for parents, but especially so, being their first baby after years of trying to conceive.

At the appointment, it was shared with them that their precious baby girl, Karah Grace, is missing a bladder and a kidney, and the kidney she does have is not functioning.

The doctor performed an amniocentesis right away and discovered baby Karah had little to no amniotic fluid in the womb (during the 2nd trimester the baby’s kidneys contribute to keep up the amniotic fluid volume).

The Kniphfers were sent right away to specialists at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital (600 miles from their home). Upon arriving, and performing tests, their team of doctors shared with them that they were able to locate her bladder! However, having only one kidney, and that is not functioning, entails a lot of possible complications.

At this point, the only thing they can do is to receive amnio infusions in hope that her lungs will develop and function well. This is a very specialized and complicated procedure which will need to be performed weekly and soon multiple times a week.  Best case survival to dialysis is about 50%, which means there is hope!

Karah Grace is due April 17th, and there are a lot of things that will determine her eligibility for dialysis, as she awaits a kidney transplant.

At this time there are still a great deal of unknowns ahead, and the Kniphfers are facing significant financial cost with medical bills and travel back and forth to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Sarah will be relocating to Cincinnati soon for the remainder of the pregnancy, and several months after Karah Grace's arrival for her specialized treatment.

We are asking others to consider donating to support them to help ease their burden in this trial, as they deserve the very best care, love, and support.

We know that Karah Grace is in the best hands with her doctors, but she is in even better hands with the God who is still yet forming her. We know prayer is a mighty help in her continued forming and growth. Right now, the specific prayer requests are:

• Miraculous healing of her kidney.

• For the amnio infusions to work each week, so that her lungs will develop and function strong.

• Continued health for Sarah, and weight gain for baby Karah (as she must be at least 5lbs to be considered for dialysis).

• For them to make it full term.

Please GIVE, PRAY, and SPREAD the word!
