Bring Kevin Home
Hi Everyone,
My name is Mary Helen McCarthy. Pictured here is my 1st cousin, Kevin Fitzgerald McCarthy. About 2 1/2 months ago, he became very ill while living in Lancaster, California. He went to work with chest pains and ended up in the ER on June 1st, diagnosed with sepsis, a pulmonary embolism and pneumonia. His breathing became so compromised that he was intubated. Shortly after, he had a heart attack and had to be resuscitated. All this provoked multiple seizures. He has been in a coma since then. I don't even think he knew how sick he was, because everything went so fast. All of us wish for a miracle, but his prognosis is not good. His brain scans indicate some brain damage. He has not once come out of the coma. Kevin is 40.
My cousin, Thomas Matthew McCarthy, and I were fortunate enough to be with him in LA for a few days, but that's simply not enough. He is now alone in a long-term, acute care facility near LAX. They have done all that they can for him and, now, have plans to move him to a sub-acute facility.
The doctors feel he is stable enough to be transported by an air ambulance back Dallas where he may receive the same type of treatment. However, this is very expensive and not covered by insurance. Air Ángels and other similar services charge about $17,000. The doctors cannot tell us how long he will be like this. If so, we all feel he is better near his mother. Unfortunately, she cannot afford all this. This fundraiser will assist in offsetting the cost to bring him home.
I just pray he can live the rest of his life with dignity and grace and surrounded by his mother, family, and friends. Time is of the essence and tomorrow is not promised.
Thank you for your compassion and understanding. Please help us bring Kevin home. With love and appreciation for any who read this message,
Mary Helen
