Support Jeff's Fight Against Cancer

Our friend, Jeff Dominguez, is currently—literally—fighting the fight of his life, as he has been diagnosed with malignant kidney cancer that has spread to the artery that his kidney feeds and to his left lung.

He is attempting not only to survive this challenge physically, but also financially.

He has undergone a seemingly endless stream of tests, including ultrasounds, CT scans, CAT scans, biopsies, and, most recently, the installation of a new hemodialysis port in his chest. Additionally, before his big surgery to remove his kidney/tumor, he will also undergo a procedure to cut off all blood supply to the affected kidney.

His surgeon has advised him that there is a 10% chance that he will not survive the surgery to remove his kidney.

Each one of his procedures has involved a co-pay of anywhere from $700 to $1,900. His medical insurance through work covered the first few co-pays, but he has reached the cutoff and, per Kaiser, is required to spend around $7,000 out of pocket before they will pick up again.

As many of you know, Jeff is employed as a social worker, not exactly the highest-earning profession. Anyway, he has had to go on FMLA leave for the past two months.

He has applied for state disability, but even that only pays about 60% of his usual take-home salary. Consequently, his and his partner, Joy's, finances have been severely impacted by this illness.

Also, Joy just started a new job, and she has no vacation or sick leave accrued, so every day she takes off to be at Jeff's side, she is simply docked pay.
