Who are we?
We are a charity (registered charity no. 1190337) run by volunteer NHS doctors, medical students and individuals who are deeply concerned for the safety and protection of healthcare workers battling the COVID-19 crisis.
Currently we are fundraising to help supply PPE and to support the development of more novel and sustainable solutions for tackling PPE shortages.
Additionally, we are exploring the scientific evidence for strategies that could be employed to prevent a critical lack of PPE. We are actively involved in research and education of issues around PPE and COVID-19 as well as advocacy for public health measures as we believe that prevention of spread in our community would have an impact on protecting our frontline staff during this pandemic.
We want to protect our NHS workers and we need your help!
What have we already achieved?
During the first peak of the coronavirus pandemic, we successfully identified organisations and businesses that had surplus PPE that was not urgently needed at the time (such as Research labs, Engineering departments, Construction companies, Beauty industry and more). We have matched more than a quarter of a million items of donated PPE to more than 500 different healthcare and social care facilities, including hospitals, GPs, community mental health clinics, care homes and hospices, as well as health and social care charities (up to date information as of 22.12.20). Because of our efforts, GPs were able to stay open during the height of the pandemic and frontline workers have been able to feel safer at work. We have recruited and trained more than 200 volunteers and processed donations from more than 500 individuals, businesses, schools and universities. Unfortunately, we still hear of many frontline colleagues feeling unsafe in their working environment. This is especially the case for those who are known to be more vulnerable in the face of the pandemic, such as those from BAME background or with known health problems, so we need more help - your help - to continue protecting NHS staff.
Where will your money go?
Every contribution you make will go directly towards protecting our brave NHS healthcare workers.
1) Support the manufacture of PPE in the UK for healthcare workers, e.g. by purchasing materials required to create face shields.
2) Purchase PPE from vetted suppliers in the UK and abroad to distribute directly to healthcare workers.
3) Support logistics of delivering PPE donations to frontline healthcare workers, e.g. helping with packaging and postage.
Will these efforts compete with the NHS supply chain?
We are still responding to appeals from frontline health and social care providers who lack PPE so that we can help them get hold of what they need urgently. We understand that it is ultimately the employer’s responsibility to provide adequate PPE to their employees. But we also understand the strains and problems involved in procuring the right PPE during a pandemic when there are supply chain issues (such as for some GPs and care homes, as well as charities). Our aim is to provide frontline workers during this pandemic with a contingency for when PPE supply does not meet demand.
