In May of 2019, dad was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer that had spread to his liver, lungs and blood. The doctors at Sloan Memorial treated his cancer for months with a variety of different chemotherapies with minimal progress. The tumor in his esophagus made it impossible for him to eat or drink normally so a feeding tube was inserted into his stomach to receive nutrition. In October, dad had his first big setback, when his tumor became ulcerated causing internal bleeding. He received a radiation treatment to stop the bleeding and was admitted to Sloan for 15 days to be monitored by doctors. Things seemed to be leveling out, then he had his second major setback. A few days after Christmas, I received a call from my mother around 10:00pm saying my dad couldn’t breathe and was in severe pain. We rushed him to Vassar where the doctors revealed via X-rays that his chest cavity was filling with gastric fluid due to a perforated (small hole) esophagus. A thoracic surgeon was called in to insert an emergency chest tube and almost 3L of fluid were removed. In the morning hours he was transferred back to Sloan where he was again admitted. Dad was assigned a dream team of surgeons that came up with a life saving idea. They inserted an 8cm stent in his esophagus That would both cover the perforated area as well as move the tumor to one side allowing him to take in liquids orally for the first time in months. Unfortunately following this procedure, doctors soon found out that his stomach stopped working and was unable to digest foods so a gastric tube was then inserted to drain all food and liquids that enter his stomach. Due to this unfortunate find, he also had another feeding tube put directly into his intestines to absorb nutrients rather than actually taking in liquids or solids. Dad is now hooked up to a pump that injects Jevity feedings directly into his intestines. He spent 22 days at Sloan. Currently, he is at home resting and is in pain everyday, all day. With God, his family and his friends by his side, we continue to pray that he recovers from these setbacks and has some well needed relief sooner rather than later. He can no longer work and medical bills have been piling high and making it very difficult for my parents to continue with their monthly bills. I am reaching out to all of my friends, family and beyond for any help possible. If you know my father, you know he is the most selfless man out there and would never ask for help on his own. He is always there for his family & friends and would give the shirt off his back to anyone! My dad is expecting two more grandkids within the next two months and we want him here to see them grow! I appreciate you all taking the time to read my dad’s story and love you all!
