After my grandmother unexpectedly passed away, I have had to support my mother and grandfather through her death. Additionally, I did not expect to have inherited the property my grandfather currently resides on. As such, I have suddenly become financially responsible for aiding my family.

The house is, unfortunately, in desperate need of repairs and upgrades. The plumbing has never been replaced since the house was built, there are constant leaks in the home, and the garage itself has a huge hole in it due to storm damage that the insurance company refuses to cover because of the age of the home. Much of the house needs renovations that can support an elderly man who lives alone.

My family does not have money to rehome my grandfather to an assisted living home, and my family additionally does not have room for my grandfather to move into their housing situations. We do not want to sell the property, as we are an Afro-Indigenous family and we want to maintain ownership of something that we worked hard to acquire.

Additionally, I am overwhelmed. Between my chronic illness, my mental health, my job status, and the price of energy rising by 10% in my state over the winter, it has been hard for me to keep up with my own bills, let alone mourn my grandmother and support my family in the wake of her death.

I know I have been constantly asking for help, but I feel like I am now drowning in a responsibility I didn't ask for, but now have to take on because someone who raised me is at risk of losing his home after losing someone he spent his entire life with.

My gratitude has been endless for the community that has supported me over the years through the multiple crises I have been through. I am asking for your help with the knowledge that I have relied on the kindness of strangers for years to support me through my living situations, and hope that you will support me during this new and unexpected chapter of my life.
