We are the neighbors of Seraphin (Sam) and Eirini Vourdas and with their permission, have started this fund to help them rebuild their lives after a devastating fire destroyed their home in the early hours Tuesday morning when strong winds blew flames from neighboring houses to theirs. There is no words to describe the complete helplessness one feels as you stand in the street outside your home watching fire spread from one house to another, on to your own, realizing there is nothing you can do to stop it. This was our experience Tuesday morning as our street stood in disbelief, many barefoot and in PJs, in freezing temperatures, watching our friends homes go up in flames. Eirini and Sam were able to get their 2 young children safely out before the fire spread to their house, but the devastation will be felt for years to come. It is too early to know the full extent of the damage but almost everything will need to be replaced and it will be possibly 9 months before they can return home.

They moved here from Greece 4 years ago when Sam was transferred for work. They have saved for years to buy their first home which they moved into this past December. Eirini describes the house as “my dream home.” They have no family here in the US. Our small community has become their pseudo family. They are overwhelmed with the concern and outpouring of love from complete strangers.
