Volunteer teacher in Assam, India
Donation protected
Hi! I’m Bara, an Oxford student, heading to India for 6 weeks to volunteer as an unpaid junior teacher with the Akshar Foundation.
Akshar is generously covering my accommodation, meals, and local travel. I am self-funding my visa and insurance, but I need your help to cover £900 for my return flight (Prague–India) and vaccinations (hepatitis B, rabies, meningococcus). Any donation, big or small, would make a huge difference to me.
Akshar provides free education to children from extremely disadvantaged backgrounds, many of whom once worked in stone quarries. Students “pay” school fees by collecting plastic waste from home, and older pupils are paid to tutor younger ones.
For 6 weeks, I will teach Science, Maths, and English, support tree planting, recycling, vocational training (including carpentry, farming, or tailoring), and teach a hands-on biochemistry project I designed to share the spirit of an Oxford education. Together, we will explore how health and disease are systems we can understand and influence.
If I am able to go, I will share regular updates on my social media so you can see the impact your support makes!
With heartfelt thanks and gratitude,
Bara
