Hello my friends,
I'm reaching out in the hope of gathering some support.
Someone dies from suicide every 40 seconds.
Between the ages of 15-29, suicide is the SECOND leading cause of death. That's more than 700,000 people who take their own lives every year. (WHO 2021).
Three years ago, my friend suffering from suicidal thoughts described how he felt and detailed an awful thought of killing himself, something I have never felt and couldn't fathom. Hearing this from a friend I truly love, I was heartbroken and shocked. But more importantly, I couldn't believe that this optimistic, energetic, wonderfully talented man could want to do such a thing to himself. During our long, supportive conversation, I said, "I just wish people weren't so scared to talk about this," and he said, "what I wish is that people ask not only those who they know are suffering, but EVERYONE if they are okay because it's usually the ones you least expect that are hurting the most."
So with his wise words, I went home and wrote a short film. And now, I'm excited to announce that we are ready to begin filming, but we need your help!
Our short film "VOICEMAILS LAST FOREVER" is a film about two housemates who struggle to process the unexpected loss of their best friend and boyfriend after he died by suicide.
We wish to create a film that brings an honest, unfiltered portrayal of depression, suicide and grief, conveying how the effects differ with each person, but the underlying truth is the same- you are not alone.
Exploring the idea that those suffering from clinical depression often do so alone, and those closest usually never know until it's too late. The film's goal is to hold up a mirror and encourage us all to reach out to our loved ones and ask them, "Are you okay?" even when you don't suspect suffering at all.
The production of this movie is budgeted at $15,000, and having already put some of our own money aside, we would greatly appreciate your help.
This project is very near and dear to our hearts, I hope it resonates with you too, and that together, we can make it happen.
Thank you so much for your help and for being a part of this journey. Let's bring awareness to a great cause and bring this project to life!
Many thanks,
Jacqui, Bradley and Brandon.
