Hey y'all it’s Safiya! I am very excited to be releasing my first EP on February 29th! The EP will consist of four songs; “When I Saw You,” “Hold Me,” “Fly Away,” and “Roses.” I have written and recorded these four songs within the past year, in between graduating college and transitioning into adult life - so it’s been a journey that I’m looking forward to finally sharing with you all.
I’m thrilled to announce that along with these songs I’ve already created, I will be releasing a series of FOUR music videos directed, filmed and produced by my stellar friends and colleagues. We have a solid plan for getting these videos to be created and released by the end of March. But this is where you come in. We need your help and support in order to make these dreams a reality.
We will film our first music video on February 22nd, and for the next four consecutive weeks we will be filming, editing and releasing a video each week for you all! (Follow me on Instagram: @_safikai3_ for daily updates!)
I’ll Break It Down For Y’all:
Production Design: Let’s be real: we are all fresh out of college- and you know we’ve been grinding while keeping our creative passions alive. Being just under a year out of college, we've learned how to be extremely resourceful. Our filming locations will be my apartment, the streets of Glendale, the beach and in a car. But even a small budget can make a huge difference in adding that last bit of pop! A cool piece of fabric to make a white wall more interesting, perfectly selected props, or any additional costuming, can be the difference between mediocrity and excellence. We aren’t asking for a lot in this category- our goal with these videos is to keep them raw, honest, and a look into who I am and will be as an artist.
Foooood! Shooting music videos are rigorous! It takes a lot of patience, diligence and creativity. And if I learned one thing in college, it’s that your health has gotta come first. So even if these videos are made in one day, I’m trying to make sure that my team is fed and happy! Craft services is huge, and it’s really important to me to have healthy food on set for the members of my crew.
Crew Compensation: I’ve secured the core group of people to direct, shoot, and produce my videos- but we all know, it takes a village. There are a lot of hands and minds that go into making music videos. We are so thankful that the community working on this is along for the ride purely driven by passion; but are making sure we can provide even a small amount for everyone working on this project. This is the core of creating quality work for you all! In order to supplement the work of an Assistant Camera Operator and Gaffer (that’s filmmaker terms for dope lighting), we are going to provide them with pay for their hard work and dedication. For those of you who don’t know, most music videos are shot in just one day- but that’s a 12- hour day full of sweat (and fun). People have got to be provided for in this huge time commitment!
Budget:
Production Design: $150 per music video
Craft Services: $100 per music video
Crew Compensation: $250 per person, per music video
Total Costs:
Production Design
$600
Craft Services
$400
Crew Compensation
$2,000
Ideally, we can have these funds as soon as possible! Since we will be releasing these videos by the end of March, we will need to be able to compensate for costs as soon as we can. Again- we have the costumes. We have the locations. We have the songs. We have the concepts. We just need a little extra money to bring the project to the next level and make it really stand out amongst the masses.
Thank You.
To have the support from you all would truly reflect what this project is about and why it’s being made in the first place. I had the privilege of being raised by wonderful communities of people. People who believed in me as an artist and person, and who always wanted to see me grow and prosper. Making these videos are my way of thanking and honoring the communities that have been rooting for me since the beginning.
Making this music video series will truly mark the start of my career as a music artist. This will open up opportunities for industry professionals to be introduced to my new style and approach to music. What I hope to bring with this platform is more awareness towards the dreams and visions that exist in low income communities. I want to inspire rising artists and creators to follow their dreams and to remember how important community is in being able to achieve that successfully. I believe in my ability to be a voice for the voiceless and to change the way music is created.
