If you’ve ever been around while I’m speaking, I’m sure you’ve noticed the sound of my voice is hoarse and soft. I often get asked if I am sick - Some people ask politely, some try to be funny, and others offer remedies for my throat.
Backstory:
At 11 years old I had a surgery to remove a benign cyst from my throat, and my vocal cords were injured in the process. It left one of them partially disconnected and the other one slightly higher. Because of this, when I speak, my throat gets fatigued easily and my voice sounds "airy" and hoarse.
When I was younger, constantly being asked why my voice sounded like it did affected me emotionally. It has been 21 years since my vocal cords were injured and, since then, it has been a long journey. Over the years, I have grown resilient and have learned to take people’s questioning with a more positive outlook. Even so, I still struggle and become frustrated when I get tired and don't feel like speaking anymore. However, not speaking is rarely an option because of the nature of my profession, and having two energetic kids at home.
A few years ago, I discovered one of the best laryngeal surgeons in the country that had operated on Adele and Shakira after they struggled with voice loss. But the thought of calling and asking for HIS help seemed unrealistic. Well, last year, on my birthday something inside of me sparked the courage, and desperate for change, I finally decided to reach out. I called, requested an appointment, and filled out all the necessary forms... not even knowing how it was all going to work.
Now, I needed to find a way to finance the appointment and trip expenses. I made it all public on social media to the people that I interacted with daily, like those at my church and women at a networking event. By sharing my vulnerability I experienced a liberation I cannot explain. All the encouraging comments, prayers, support from my family, and a cousin letting me borrow the money made it all possible. Within a month, a dream that seemed impossible became a reality.
On September of 2018 I went to Boston and finally met with Dr. Zeitels. After looking at my vocal cords and explaining what all was wrong, he finally offered something I desperately needed... HOPE.
He said I was a candidate for a surgery that would improve the condition of my vocal cords, stating that it would help with my fatigue and overall sound.
The Details:
The approximate cost of the surgery is $75,000. It will take place in Boston, after which I will have to rest my voice for two weeks.
I decided to create this GoFundMe account after many of you expressed your desire to help me, and for this I am eternally grateful. This whole experience has made me more vulnerable and stronger at the same time. My family and I would like to thank you in advance for your donations and support. I’m placing this all in God’s hands and leaving no room for regrets.

Cuando me escuchan hablar me preguntan si estoy enferma...unos lo hacen muy prudentemente, otros se avientan un malísimo chiste como el clásico "Ay, no me grites" otros me recomiendan infinidad de remedios.
Cuando era pequeña estos comentarios me desinflaban inmediatamente y a veces prefería ni hablar para evitar este tipo de reacciones. Con los años uno aprende a no tomarse las cosas tan personales y ahora tengo un repertorio de respuestas de las cuales escojo, depende del entorno. Ahora solo me enfoco en regular mi reacción cuando estoy cansada y ya no quiero hablar mas, cuando quiero hablar mas pero me frustra la impotencia.
Mi causa fue una lesión traumática a los 11 años, producto de una cirugía para remover un quiste benigno en el exterior de la laringe. Después de esta operación una de las cuerdas quedo parcialmente desprendida y la otra a desnivel causando que al hablar me esfuerce mas de lo normal y cause cansancio y un sonido ronco.
El año pasado, después de 20 años de la cirugía que lastimo mis cuerdas vocales, me decidí a llamar a uno de los mejores cirujanos laringólogos. Ya había leído sobre el hace seis años, pues el operó a Adele y a Shakira cuando perdieron su voz, pero no se habían dado las cosas. Hasta que por fin, en mi cumpleaños del año pasado llame y para mi suerte tenían citas disponibles y llene todas las formas requeridas. El siguiente obstáculo fue conseguir el dinero para los gastos del viaje y la consulta. Todo esto lo hice publico en las redes sociales, en la iglesia, con las personas que convivo día a día, hasta en un evento de networking donde se dio el momento para hablar sobre esto. Al hablar de esto experimente una liberación que no puedo explicar, también al leer los comentarios de las personas que me quieren, al sentir el apoyo de mi familia, al escuchar sus oraciones y por ultimo cuando alguien a quien quiero y admiro mucho me presto el dinero necesario. Esto hizo posible que en menos de un mes estuviera ahí. Lo soñado se hizo realidad.
En Septiembre del 2018 fui a visitar a uno de los mejores cirujanos laringólogos, el Dr. Zeitels. Después de asombrarse en el estado que están mis cuerdas vocales y explicarme como estaban me ofreció una solución. Hay manera de ayudarme para disminuir el cansancio y mejorar la proyección de mi voz por medio de una cirugía.
Esta cirugía tiene un costo aproximado de $75,000.
Tendré que viajar a Boston y después de la cirugía reposar mi voz por dos semanas. Por lo complejo que es la cirugía tendrá que abrir la garganta y la recuperación tomará más tiempo de lo que yo anticipaba.
Decidí abrir esta cuenta por el deseo que muchos de ustedes expresaron por ayudarme. Y por eso estoy eternamente agradecida, esta experiencia me a hecho una persona mas vulnerable y mas fuerte a la misma vez. Y de antemano, mi familia y yo, agradecemos sus donaciones. Lo pongo en las manos de Dios esperando lo mejor, sin darle lugar al 'hubiera.'
