Homeless People Need Underwear Too!
My name is Andy Furst, I am a Buddhist teacher and a Unitarian Universalist. This past weekend, I participated in the City Reach program in Boston. It was a profound experience in which I worked shoulder to shoulder with people without homes to learn, serve, and do something about homelessness.
On Saturday morning we sorted through and passed out donated clothing and toiletries to over 170 guests. The experience gave me great satisfaction. Being able to help someone find a pair of pants or shoes that would fit them and get them through the winter is something anyone can relate to.
Disappointment came when we ran short of some simple items, most notably underwear, especially women's underwear.
The needs are pretty straightforward. The solution is as well. $1000 can provide a lot of underwear and bras to people who desperately need them. It would be a small, but meaningful dent in the challenge of homelessness.
One last word before you donate. The Reverend Mary Jane Eaton, of the City Reach Program taught me something important. When it comes to homelessness it is OK to be mad. Because out of anger comes action.
I encourage you to find a little anger and channel it constructively to help people without houses. Please donate what you can to help the cause.
