On April 8, our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend Ron had a tragic accident while on vacation with his family in Italy. After a long day of touring the Vatican, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s, sharing his passion for culture and Italy with those he loved, he collapsed due to low blood sugar, and fell, hitting his head on the Vatican marble.
He suffered a skull fracture, which caused severe bleeding and swelling in the brain, requiring emergency surgery to relieve the pressure. Thankfully, the surgery was successful, and the swelling has been reducing every day, though the long-term impacts aren’t yet known. He remains sedated and intubated in an ICU in Rome, where we see some promising signs - he is moving all limbs, breathing spontaneously, and pupils are equal - ALL great signs. He’s still a little too sleepy to remove the breathing tube, but there are plans to reduce sedation in the coming days for a full neurological examination.
His children had to return home, but his wife Kim remains by his side; it will likely be weeks before there is a chance of him coming home safely, and she hopes to be there to give him extra strength. Ron has been the primary income earner, and his sales career is heavily dependent on him being active and with clients, further impacting their finances in the near term; the family could use any help you can provide. These funds would be used by Kim and family to cover expenses while Ron works through his recovery, as well as medical expenses and potential future medical transport back home – unfortunately, all very expensive items.
For those of you that know Ron, I’m sure you’ll join us in wishing him a full recovery back to his gregarious, charming, bigger-than-life persona – he means the world to us, and we find comfort in that when he fell, it was outside the walls of St. Peter’s Basilica, with thousands praying over him on his way to the hospital. In addition to any financial support you can give to the family, we ask you for your continued prayers and well wishes in the coming days – we will post any updates as they come.
Please give what you can to help Kim and the girls get through this awful tragedy.
