Overview:

From cave paintings of constellations to high-resolution photos of planets, we’ve always been captivated by outer space and our potential to explore the unknown. People across the globe are pushing boundaries and sharing their experiences online; however, very few have been able to personalize an adventure in space.

Unfortunately, space access is limited because missions are expensive and many current technologies are controlled by engineers, scientists, corporations, and government agencies. Our solution? ContentCube.

As winner of the SEDS SAT-II competition, ContentCube is bringing novel technology applications to the space and personal media industries through its innovative payload. The CubeSat will be equipped with the first ever exposed external display screen in the space environment. A slideshow of images will be circulated on the screen throughout the CubeSat’s projected lifetime (roughly one year) and will be photographed from a camera attached to ContentCube’s extendable solar array. These pictures will be uplinked and downlinked from the Virginia Tech Ground Station, where the inspireFly team will perform health inspections specifically focused on screen deterioration, damage, and image visibility.

The inspireFly team is driven by its core belief of promoting diversity and inclusion in all fields of study, including working with talent from a spectrum of ethnic, sexual, gender, and socioeconomic backgrounds; the team is 20% female with over 54% minority representation. The fully-undergraduate team exhibits a 55-45 engineering to non-engineering ratio, and includes a variety of Virginia Tech majors:

- College of Engineering: Aerospace, Mechanical, Computer Science, Electrical, Industrial, and Materials Science.

- Pamplin College of Business:  Business Information Technology, Finance & Business Law, and Management & Marketing.

The inspireFly team has set a goal for our friends and families of $40,000.  Your donation will allow our team to purchase materials, software, test devices and components for our satellite. Though our launch to space is covered by NanoRacks Inc, our undergraduate team will need to secure funding for the entirety of ContentCube's development.

We would like to thank our initial sponsors, the Student Engineers Council at VT and the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, for getting us to this phase. We would also like to thank the Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS-USA), Astranis, and NanoRacks for hosting the SEDS SAT-II competition. Having selected us as the winning team, we will be working diligently over the coming semesters to build our satellite!
