My name is Katie and I'm a substitute teacher in Las Vegas, NV. I am a wife and a mother of 3 children ages 12, 10 and 3.
Three years ago, while pregnant it was discovered that I had Stage II Cervical Cancer. I underwent 30 doses of external radiation, 5 doses of internal radiation, and 8 doses of chemo. In addition, I had a total of 10 different surgeries related to the cancer. Treatment was brutal! I am happy to say that, even though it was intense, it worked! I am here today, living cancer free!!
Unfortunately, the high doses of radiation caused some pretty severe damage to my bladder. The damage is so bad that my entire bladder is burned and the pain is equivalent to either child birth or kidney stones! As a result I have gone through 3 additional surgeries to try to repair the damage. I was left with only two options: live with the pain associated with it, or remove my bladder. Neither of these work for me since I'm only 37 years old and plan on being around for a while!
I began to do my own research and found out about Hyperbaric treatment. It has been proven effective with people who have post-radiation damage to their soft tissue. This is me !!! Sign me up!!!
Luckily, I do have insurance that will cover the cost of the treatment. However, because I will have to undergo 45 sessions that last 2.5 hours each, I will not be able to work full time for at least 8 weeks.
As a substitute, I am paid for only time that I am present. I do not earn sick or vacation pay. I am the sole provider for my family.
I have lived with the damage of cancer for 3 years. I don't want to miss the opportunity to possibly live pain free, but at the same time I cannot put my family in financial ruin.
