Cancer Sucks

Donation protected

This is a story about an amazing man named Matthew Hickman. Matthew grew up in Pryor, Oklahoma. Matt has been healthy with no childhood or adult illnesses up until this last year. Matt has been fighting an uphill battle of infection with surgeries and has had very painful procedures over a misdiagnosis that led to more and more problems. Anyone that knows Matt knows that he would give you the shirt off of his back. Once you got to know him and become friends with him you knew that it was an honest and true friendship. Matt would drop anything to help a friend out. Matt was taking Humira and Imuran for an autoimmune disorder however it made him feel very sick. We questioned the doctors regarding the Humira due to infection and everything I read said it could kill you if you have infection. The doctors and staff assured me it was what he needed. We "thank GOD" were not told about a loading dose so we gave him one shot instead of the six shots he was supposed to take. Within a couple of days he was in the ER with 106 temperature and going straight to surgery. The doctors apologized said they knew it was going to go one way or the other. We continued to do what the doctors told us to do and started up both medications after the surgery, I also questioned the doctors with Matt’s family history of cancer if it was a good idea to place him on two immunosuppressant that would knock out his white blood count, suppress him from being able to heal and could cause cancer. Once again I was assured he needed this but by November he stopped taking them both and immediately felt better. The middle of January 2015, Matt developed a knot in his right upper thigh that was very tender to touch and this knot grew very quickly. Matt has lost 50lbs in the last year battling all of this and Friday May 22, 2015 we got the dreaded phone call that the needle aspiration they took from the knot came back as cancer. We have spoken to the Cancer doctor and he appears to be aggressive with quickly treating him. Even though we have insurance a lot of these tests are outrageous. We both know this is going to be an uphill battle but we can do this. Matt has never backed down from anything and is one of the strongest men I know personally and he’s not going to lay down and not fight this hand over fist. At this time the goal is set for $20,000.  Due to the medical bills piling up, the surgeries Matt has just endured, and the medications we have had to get the chemo pills alone we had to get were $15,000 a bottle and there are 2 bottles so that alone was $30,000.  Thank GOD for insurance but we still had a hefty hefty copayment we had to make in order to get the medication. Now come Friday we are starting immunotherapy which we have no idea what the cost of this medication is going to cost us but no matter the price we are going to get whatever we need to help fight kick this cancers butt.  Anything will help please don't refrain from giving even if it’s only $10.00 because any dollar amount will be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to share this.
