My name is Peter Girard. As most of you know, I have been struggling with lung disease for several years. I was diagnosed with end stage COPD with fibrosis. The fibrosis is an underlying condition which attributes to my need for oxygen at much higher levels than normal COPD patients. I need constant oxygen at 10 L continually.
At this point I'm unable to walk 50 feet without stopping to catch my breath, eating and talking also causes shortness of breath. I can only sleep in my recliner, to keep my head elevated. Quality of life for me is gone.
My only hope for survival is a double lung transplant. For the last six months, I have been seeing a transplant surgeon and going through all the necessary testing at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. My last visit was March 3rd, and I was delighted to find I was placed on the transplant list.
As I said, this is the only hope for my survival.
On the downside I will need to move near Philadelphia. To be actively listed, I need to be within a 3 hour window to reach the hospital when I get the call that they have a match for me, which could possibly take up to 18 months. Living here is a 5 hour trip under the best of circumstances.
This is a diffucult request for me to make, I have never had to ask for help, but this is my only chance for this gift of life.
