Reconstructive Knee Surgery

Hi, my name is Phillip, I’m 24 years old, originally from South Africa, and I’m reaching out for help with something I never imagined I’d have to ask for.

I came to America chasing a dream to build a life through rugby. I played for the Columbia Rhinos RFC, a club that quickly became my family. And when injury took me off the field, I poured everything into coaching. Now I serve as head coach, leading a team I love with everything I have.

But behind the scenes, I’ve been in a painful, exhausting battle. After suffering a serious knee injury, I was told I need reconstructive surgery just to regain normal movement and quality of life. For the past year, I’ve been fighting with my South African medical aid, going back and forth through appeals, paperwork, and endless frustration only for the claim to be fully denied.

Trying to make this happen on my own, I sold my car to cover some of the costs. But because of how long the injury has gone untreated, the damage has worsened. Now the procedure is even more complex and expensive than it would have been a year ago.

I’m not someone who likes to ask for help. I’ve always tried to figure things out on my own. But I’ve hit a wall. This surgery is no longer optional. It’s the difference between moving forward and staying stuck in constant pain.
